We call on Birmingham City Council to abandon its proposal to make 20mph the standard speed limit on all local roads.

Instead, speed limits should be determined road by road. The existing 30mph limit should remain unless a specific assessment of that road demonstrates that a 20mph limit is necessary and proportionate to address an identified safety risk.

We support targeted 20mph limits where there is a clear, evidenced need – including appropriately timed restrictions outside schools and at other locations presenting particular safety risks.

The Council should not impose 20mph simply because a road is classified as a B road, C road or unclassified local road, nor because of a city-wide policy presumption.

We therefore call on Birmingham City Council to remove the commitment that “A limit of 20mph will be standard on all local roads” and replace it with an evidence-led, road-by-road approach.
