What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device. The law that governs them in the UK — the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR), read with the UK GDPR — also covers similar technologies that store or read information on your device, such as your browser’s local storage. This policy covers both.

The short version

This website uses only essential cookies to work and stay secure. With your permission, it also uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it. When you first visit, a banner asks you to accept or reject analytics cookies. We set no analytics cookies unless you accept, and you can change your mind at any time by clearing this site’s cookies in your browser. We do not use advertising cookies.

What we actually store

  • Administrator login cookie (payload-token): set only when an authorised administrator or councillor signs in to the content management system. It keeps them signed in and is strictly necessary for that service. Ordinary visitors never receive it. It is a session cookie protected against access by other scripts.
  • Poll participation marker: if you choose to vote in a poll on one of our news pages, the site stores a small marker in your browser’s local storage so it knows you have already voted and can show you the results instead of the ballot. It is created only by your action, contains no personal information, never leaves your device, and you can remove it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data.

Analytics (Google Analytics)

If you accept analytics cookies, we use Google Analytics 4 to collect anonymised information about how people use the site — such as which pages are visited and how visitors arrive — so we can improve it. IP addresses are anonymised, and we do not use this data to identify you or for advertising. Google processes this data on our behalf. If you reject, Google Analytics runs in a cookieless mode that sets no cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time by clearing this site’s cookies, which brings the banner back.

Third parties

Most pages on this site make no requests to third-party servers — the typefaces, images and code are served from our own infrastructure. The exceptions are: Google Analytics, which loads only if you accept analytics cookies (Google acts as our data processor, with IP-anonymisation enabled; if you reject, no analytics cookies are set); and Cloudflare, which we use for security and anti-spam checks. If you follow links to third-party services — our Facebook page, or the national party’s joining and donation pages — those sites set their own cookies under their own policies, over which we have no control.

Managing cookies and site data

You can delete or block cookies and clear local storage through your browser’s settings; every major browser publishes instructions for doing so. Blocking the administrator cookie has no effect on ordinary browsing, and clearing local storage simply means a poll may offer you the ballot again.

Changes and contact
